If we made an effort to just list the names of the many galleries and museums that make up the complex of buildings called the Vatican Museums, that would fill many pages. And if we took the next step - to list all of the artists and great art works held in those buildings - that would fill books. In fact, the Vatican itself has filled volumes with such information at the Vatican library.

The vast Vatican Museums grew from one purchase of a sculpture of Laocoon and his sons as they did battle with a sea serpent, brought by Pope Julius II in 1506. From that simple purchase the Vatican Museums has swelled to dozens of galleries and literally thousands of artworks available for your viewing.

A great example of the diversity of these collections is the Etruscan Museum which opened in 1837. This collection is charged with caring for some rare and precious excavated samples of some very ancient art that came from archaeological digs in southern Etruria and surrounding vicinities. These art works reflect the style of the Roman Empire not far away in the mosaics and very old sarcophagi that were held in the Egyptian Museum.

Another wonderful collection is the Gallery of Tapestries which consists of wall hangings from the fifteenth century forward to the seventeenth century. The first time these weaves were put on display was in 1814 and their artistry is so exquisite that any great museum in the world would welcome them to their collections.

The variety of the Vatican Museums continues at the Gallery of Maps. Painted directly on the gallery walls are 40 panels representing regions of the world in map form. These maps are both very artistic and fascinating as well. It’s interesting to reflect that these kinds of location tools came before GPS and other modern toys we use and they were the only means the explorers that ventured out from Italy found many of the lands of the new world.

There is no doubt that the Raphael Rooms stand out as an outstanding part of the Vatican Museums collection. It is interesting that the rooms are not named for Raphael’s art work but for the efforts Raphael contributed to decorate the rooms themselves when the rooms were built between 1447 and 1455.

You might blush for no reason if you want to visit the Gregorian Museum of Profane Art. But in context, “profane” means that the artwork you will find here is of a secular (or non-sacred) nature. This gallery is quite new to the Vatican Museums, having opened in 1970 to display Roman art work from the Imperial and Republican eras, including statues and sarcophagi to name just a few of the things you will find in this gallery.

Another aptly named collection is the Carriage Pavilion which opened in 1973 in a building that was built under the Square Garden. This unique collection holds the many carriages that served to take Popes and other high church officials to their appointments. In addition to the carriages, you will also find a photographic history of papal transport, harnesses for the horses and other paraphernalia and historic documentation related to this topic.

But of all of these fascinating galleries, none can match the Sistine Chapel for fame. Without a doubt, it is the world famous 10,000 square foot painting that Michelangelo did on the ceiling of the chapel that draws the crowds. While in the Sistine Chapel, it will pay to look around because you will find many great works of art in addition to that famous ceiling, including another large work by Michelangelo called The Last Judgment.

That famous ceiling painting will fascinate you as it has thousands before. The nine panels of the painting show various biblical characters including various nude men, Sibyls and Noah himself. But it is that depiction of Jehovah reaching out to give life to man with a touch of his finger to Adam’s that is the best known image of this masterpiece. The famous author Goethe said of the Sistine Chapel artwork:

“Without having seen the Sistine Chapel, one can form no appreciable idea of what one man is capable of achieving.”

Goethe’s words could easily to applied to hundreds of other outstanding art works by hundreds of master artists whose work is on display in the many buildings of the Vatican Museums.

One of the most popular tourist attractions of Rome is a set of stairs built by the French, yet named the Spanish Steps. Now, some might wonder how they can be a tourist attraction when they are “just steps”, but that innocuous passage way between the Villa Medici & Piazza di Spagna is a marvellous journey in itself, regardless of the destination.

The Spanish Steps or as they are otherwise known, the Scalinata di Spagna, are 137 steps that were built between 1723 and 1725. They can be found near a outdoor plaza that is triangular in shape called the Piazza di Spagna which itself is one of the most popular tourist sites in Rome.

The Spanish Steps themselves are elegant, artistic, dark and winding so your time on them will include moving through some of the most scenic and busy parts of Rome. The steps have their own beauty worth seeing. Any time of year there is something to see on the steps but in springtime, they are especially lovely as the azaleas in the municipal greenhouses explode with color.

In springtime the Spanish Steps come to life with flowers and people out enjoying the warm weather, knowing that it is soon to turn into a Roman summertime. Rome is capable of hot weather even into the fall. Near the steps there are elegant boutiques and a wide variety of shops, cafe’s and delightful restaurants to sample. While Roman law forbids it now, tourists and locals alike used to love to get a light lunch and sit on the steps to soak up the atmosphere. But even with the rules, Romans know that the law is often not followed to the letter and you can still enjoy this tradition if you do as Romans do when in Rome.

Near the lower entrance to the steps is another of the famous Bernini fountains called La Barcaccia or the Fountain of the Old Boat. This wonderful outdoor sculpture shows a sea faring vessel at the center of the fountain. There is reason to believe that the actual ship used in this fountain was designed by Bernini’s son, Gian Lorenzo. The water of the fountain “leaks” from open holes in this creative masterpiece that was commissioned by Pope Urbano VIII to be built by Bernini in 1627.

Enjoying a great work of outdoor art may put you in a literary mood so you can enjoy the Keats-Shelly Memorial House while you are there. After seeing two enjoyable sights, you may wish to partake in a cool beverage before you start your climb up the Spanish Steps.

Don’t worry too much about getting winded on the climb because the designers provided three resting areas of flat plateaus for you to rest, enjoy some shopping or a snack or just watch the locals and tourists stream by. Once you get to the top of the stairs, don’t rush on too quickly. Instead look back at the wonderful view of where you came from and the move on to enjoy the Church of Trinta dei Monti.

The formal name of this lovely church is the Santissima Trinita al Monte Pincio. The initial design and construction of this church dates back to 1502 and it took almost 200 years to complete the work. The Gothic style is distinctive, as is the neo-classical facade that you first encounter when you come off of the steps. The love affair that many Roman designers had with Egyptian style art work that dates back to the third century is evident in the obelisk outside the church.

Just a short walk way is a well known spot known as the Via Veneto. This location became known in the 1950s as a place where a young girl could get pinched by a flirtatious Italian boy. While that kind of forward behaviour has calmed down in modern times, it is still a great area of Rome to shop, dine and enjoy the marvellous architecture all around you.
