When visiting Hawaii most people think of lush tropical trees and white sandy beaches. After all, Hawaii is the perfect spot for relaxing and sipping fruity drinks. However, there is one somber tourist spot that should not be missed. It is the memorial at Pearl Harbor.

Since the 2335 US soldiers died in the Pearl Harbor, the mood at the memorial is somber even today over sixty years after the attack. The park does a nice job of filtering the average number of 4500 guests through the memorial daily. Upon arrival to the memorial you are given a ticket and told when your entry to the movie theater will be. The time of year of your visit determines your wait time. During the summer months when crowds are at their highest you may have to wait a couple of hours. But, there is plenty to occupy your time. There is a museum that contains memorabilia such as letters from soldiers to loved ones and uniforms. The museum also has photos of Japanese planes as well as map showing the destruction of the harbor.

Hawaii is a beautiful vacation destination. It makes for either a quiet and mild vacation consisting of countless hours lying on a beach or wildly active vacation sure to please event the most avid thrill seekers. What thrill seeking vacation would be complete without exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO). The national park occupies a vast array of terrain ranging from tropical beaches to the sub arctic Mauna Loa summit. The huge park has two active volcanoes.

If and when the lava reaches the ocean, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid permeate the air. These gases are toxic. Every one should be careful, especially pregnant women, young children and people with upper respiratory problems. The smell of sulfur is strong in the air.

Ideally suited for browning and slow cooking, its weight can be a hindrance to anyone with a problem lifting heavy objects.

Clay is a unique cookware material that dates back to being used in Roman times. It’s quite wonderful for making roasted or baked vegetables and meats. Clay bakers should be immersed in water for 15 to 20 minutes prior each use for proper performance. Clay cooking is reputed to quite a healthy way to cook your food since it cooks in the foods own natural juices rather than adding fats and oils. You’ll find your clay baker will last many years if properly handled.

Beautiful copper is another excellent heat conductor but is also like aluminum in that it is a soft metal known to react with acidic foods. If you’re interested in copper cookware, look for the copper product lines now available with stainless steel linings to avoid food reactions. These pots and pans are generally on the more expensive side of cookware options and will require regular polishing in order to maintain their beauty.

The historic village of Porthleven, Cornwall is the most southerly working harbour in mainland UK. The harbour exists today due to HMS Anson being wrecked on Loe Bar on December 29th 1807. Tobias Roberts, a hero that day, swam through stormy seas out to the Anson. A rope was tied around Tobias enabling him to create an escape route for those on board. Although he successfully reached the ship, over one hundred crew perished including the ship’s Captain Lydiard.

Appalled by the loss of life, Tobias Roberts knew that a harbour of safe refuge was urgently needed. Being a man of determination he won the battle and Porthleven Harbour was constructed and then improved at a later date. Once a hive of commercial activity including imports and exports, boat building and fishing, trade declined leaving Porthleven harbour supporting a reduced number of commercial boats, pleasure craft and sports.

Today, the harbour still plays a major role attracting visitors from all over the world.
During the early 1990’s whilst serving on the local council, it became obvious that Porthleven’s economic future would become more and more reliant on attracting visitors. With this in mind the village’s first commercial website was introduced which is attracting visitors from around the globe.

In addition, brown tourist signs were introduced and publicised the village in a variety of ways including the Discover Porthleven leaflet which is now reproduced annually.
Of course the village received media attention well beyond affordable advertising when it was hit by a hurricane in December 1989.

Porthleven has a number of quality self catering cottages, B&B and hotels situated around the harbour, above the beach and within the village. Many accommodate commanding views of the bay, the harbour or surrounding countryside.
